The Linen Hall Library began in 1788 as the Belfast Reading Society, founded by leading Presbyterian radicals to “seek a spirit of general enquiry... for the promotion of knowledge in the city of Belfast and its neighbourhood”.  It has an unparalleled collection of archives including the Irish and Local Studies Collection, Genealogy Collection, Theatre & Performing Arts Archive and the internationally renowned Northern Ireland Political Collection.
