Wooden Bridge

The castle is poised above the sea on an isolated crag, reached by a wooden bridge.

One of Ireland’s most romantic ruins, Dunluce Castle’s history and archaeology have close connections, both peaceful and bloody, between Ulster and Scotland.

The MacQuillans occupied the castle initially and then it became the home of the MacDonnells, descendants of the powerful Scottish Clan McDonald, medieval Lords of the Isles. 

As you look towards the Gatehouse you will see the surviving corbelled turrets, a traditional feature of 17th century Scottish architecture.
