Mill Ponds
Mossley Mill was purchased in 1859 by two cousins, Henry and John Campbell (of Ulster-Scots ancestry), who made significant developments to the mill, establishing a school, homes for workers and a new sports pavilion.
Three mill dams were created at the Mill. This meant that water and steam power could run the mill machinery and increase production, bringing new employment to the area.
Today, the mill ponds have been preserved and enhanced to support the area’s biodiversity: this important wetland habitat is now an ‘urban pond’ filled with freshwater wildlife.
