Titanic's Dry Dock
Belfast’s maritime heritage stretches back centuries; and the success of the Port of Belfast is testament to the ingenuity and enterprise of numerous individuals, many of whom were of Ulster-Scots pedigree.
It was in this very dry dock that RMS Titanic spent her final days in Belfast. Here, the workers put the finishing touches on the world’s most luxurious liner.
The Thompson Graving Dock (nowadays better known as Titanic’s Dock) was, in its day, the largest dry dock in the world. Construction on this dock had begun in 1903 and it took 8 years to complete. Even today its appearance is breath-taking, and to gaze at its dimensions is to realise the sheer vastness of Titanic and Olympic resting in that dock prior to their completion and first sea trials.
