Inside Church Ruins

The ruined church here is a medieval building designed in the shape of a Greek Orthodox cross.  Templecorran became home to Ireland’s first Presbyterian congregation from 1613 although it was technically an Anglican church.

The Church of Ireland in the early 17th century was short of clergy so Ballycarry’s landlord, William Edmonstone brought over a Scottish minister, Edward Brice, minister of Drymen in Stirlingshire.  While undoubtedly serving as a clergyman of the Church of Ireland, Brice retained his Presbyterian outlook and was eventually deposed by Bishop Leslie in 1636.
