Kitchen Quarters Myth

As legend would have it, one of the most popular myths about the castle took place right here.  According to popular local folklore, the Earl of Antrim’s wife (the former Duchess of Buckingham) had been accustomed to entertaining on a grand scale.  One stormy night, she welcomed her guests to dinner at Dunluce Castle.

During dinner there was a resounding crash and the kitchen quarters with the cook and servants were precipitated into the sea below.  The legend says that Lady Antrim refused to stay in Dunluce and the family relocated to Glenarm Castle, further south.

However...Detailed paintings from the late 18th and early 19th centuries reveal that the kitchens of the castle were still intact – so it seems this colourful story is just a myth.
